Project Brief: Students will choose a short poem or song to serve as the basis of this project. They will then illustrate this poem using only typography. Nothing besides the type can be used. To inspire students we will look at the work of Martin Venezky and David Carson, two designers who are famous for their use of experimental typographic juxtapositions. Students will start by creating handmade collages from type that seek to capture the rhythm and mood of their poem or song though composition. Students will then develop this into a digital collage challenging conventional ideas about type layout and using the design elements of scale, rhythm, space and hierarchy to recreate the rhythm of the poem or song visually.
